As they discover the change of seasons, Charlie and Katie also sadly learn many of their animal and creature friends have left with the summer sun. As autumn fills the air, they realize that the ospreys, the butterflies, the hummingbirds and the sea turtles have gone away. Filled with wonder about where their friends went and why, Charlie and Katie seek the answers from their wisest friend, an owl named Joe.

Joe's knowledge takes them on travels through Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and the Azores Islands. They marvel at the wondrous abilities of their special friends to fly and swim such great distances. And all the while, they are reminded that one day their friends will return.
